In the event that a patient should need surgery, he/she will work closely with our office staff to ensure that the surgery scheduling and processing goes smoothly. You should receive a telephone call 24-48 hours after your appointment regarding your surgery date. Surgery is generally scheduled within two weeks of an initial appointment. Emergency procedures are scheduled as soon as possible.

All patients are required to have pre-operative testing. The necessary pre-operative orders will be mailed and/or given during a visit. Please review all of the orders given and remember the following:

Call the pre-operative (pre-surgical) testing number listed on the order.
Make an appointment with the hospital pre-testing department  (or)
If required by your health plan, make an appointment with your PCP for pre-testing.
Complete the pre-operative tests 2-3 weeks in advance.
Read, sign and return the consent form.
If required, send your surgery deposit to our office.

Insurance: Our office will call your health plan for pre-authorization and will also check surgery benefits. You will receive immediate notification if your health plan denies authorization.

Hospital Admission: Carpal tunnel, ulnar surgery and muscle biopsy procedure patients are outpatient and discharged within 2-5 hours after surgery. Most spinal procedures are performed on an outpatient (23 hours or less) basis. Lumbar fusion patients are admitted after surgery and generally stay 1-2 days. Cranial surgery patients are admitted after surgery and generally stay 3-4 days.

Surgery Assistant: Most neurological procedures require an assistant. Assistance may be performed by another physician, physician’s assistant and/or a surgical assistant. Please note that Dr. Melisi and/or Dr. Sharma will be performing the surgery.
